Text: Romans 8:12-17

Point: We Are One In Christ

I. Together with Christ

First Point: We are (dead) to SIN 

Romans 8:12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For we live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.  

  1. Supporting Point: We owe a debt 

a.) Debtors because of SIN 

b.) Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world: and death by; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 

13. For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Vs. 12-21  

  1. Supporting Point: We KILL the flesh 

  1. For we live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. We put the flesh to death 

  2. We seek (God) who’s the giver of life, though we live in a fleshly house, we submit to the Spirit, living NOT after the flesh to mortify the works of our bodies

Second Point: We are Sons of God (vs. 14)

  1. Supporting Point: Romans 8:14 For as many are led of the Spirit of God, they are sons of God. 

  2. Supporting Point: But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.   

II. We Children of God (vs. 15-16)

First Point: We are confirmed by the (Spirit) word of God 

1. Supporting Point: Believer’s are to live in Him so He may live in them 

a.) For ye have not received the Spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry Abba, Father. 

b.) 1 Corinthians 2:12 We have not received the. Not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us by God. 

c.) Mark 14:36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt. 

  Conclusion 

A. First Summation: We are heirs of God (vs. 17)

1. Romans 8:17 And if children of God, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. 

  1. Acts 26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

b.) Philippians 1:29 For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;
